How AI Is Changing the Business Analysis Profession

For decades, Business Analysts have been at the intersection of business, people, processes and technology. They have conducted workshops, interviewed stakeholders, analysed processes, documented requirements and worked with development and testing teams to turn business needs into solutions. AI is now changing how much of this work gets done. But AI is not making Business Analysts less important. It is changing where they create value.
From documenting requirements to understanding them
Traditionally, a significant part of BA work has involved collecting information and turning it into documentation:
Meet stakeholders → conduct workshops → document requirements → review → revise → repeat.
AI can now analyse large volumes of documents, meeting transcripts, specifications, policies and existing requirements in seconds. It can identify patterns, inconsistencies, gaps and areas that need further investigation.
This means BAs can spend less time processing information and more time understanding the business problem and challenging assumptions.
AI as the BA's second pair of eyes
One of the biggest challenges in requirements engineering is that a requirement can appear perfectly clear to the person who wrote it, while being interpreted differently by someone else.

“The system shall automatically approve a customer's request.”
A good BA will ask:
Under what conditions? Who is eligible? What happens when information is missing? Are there exceptions? Does approval require verification? What downstream systems are affected?
AI can help identify these questions and areas of uncertainty, allowing the BA to enter stakeholder discussions better prepared.
The BA remains responsible for the business decision. AI helps the BA ask better questions.
From manual traceability to intelligent analysis
Traceability has traditionally been maintained through spreadsheets, documents and ALM tools. As projects become larger, maintaining relationships between business objectives, requirements, design and tests becomes increasingly difficult.
AI can help identify potential relationships, gaps and change impacts:
“This requirement has no corresponding verification activity.”
“Changing this requirement may affect three related requirements.”
This turns traceability from a documentation exercise into an analytical capability.
The BA's skillset is evolving
The future BA will need to be good at more than writing requirements.
The most valuable skills will increasingly include:
Critical thinking — challenging AI rather than blindly accepting its output.
Contextual understanding — knowing the business, users and environment.
Questioning — using AI to identify what needs to be explored further.
Stakeholder management — facilitating discussions, resolving conflicts and building consensus.
AI literacy — understanding AI's capabilities, limitations and risks.
The role is evolving from requirements documentation to requirements intelligence.
